Located in the south of Prince Edward County, Honey Pie Hives & Herbals is an ecological honey and herb farm. Bay Woodyard, herbalist and Gavin North, beekeeper, have been in business for 21 years. They have been in the process of rewilding their farm since the beginning and efforts include turning hayfields into forest using native species, thickening tree lines and sowing a wildflower meadow.
Bay Woodyard, queen bee at Honey Pie is the creator of their line naturally dyed fibres. Her natural dye journey began as a teenager when she taught crafts to kids at summer camp and had them dyeing their T-shirts with wild plants. She went on to study drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and took some textiles courses for fun. Knitting and crochet have been her favorite hobby for most of her life. She can now add spinning to the list of beloved fibre arts.
In 2019 she decided to add naturally dyed fibres to her extensive honey and herb product line. She buys locally sourced wool, cleans it and sends it to the Wellington Fibre Mill, in Elora Ontario, to be spun into different weights of yarn. Then she dyes the wool using plants – many of which she wildcrafts or grows in her herb gardens. She loves to use rainwater in her dye pots and simmer them over a fire. Her yarns are from different breeds of sheep and offer the hand knitter a variety of textures and colours to get creative with. As well as the local wool she offers a line of naturally dyed certified organic merino wool in several weights. She also offers small outdoor workshops on natural dyeing over a fire on the farm.
